One of the Best Public Courses to Play on an Augusta, Georgia Golf Vacation

Jones Creek Golf Club, Augusta, GA Few of us will ever have the chance to play "at" Augusta, like those competing in The Masters this week, but anyone can play "in" Augusta while attending the tournament or taking a Georgia golf vacation.

There are a few good public courses just over the border in South Carolina, but if you want to play quality golf on authentic, Augusta, Ga., turf, Jones Creek Golf Club, located only a few miles from Augusta National, should be on the top of your list.

Rees Jones, the course’s architect, made the most of an awkward piece of property at Jones Creek, which is located in a residential subdivision that, unfortunately, could win an award for shoe-horning in as many homes as possible along its fairways and behind its greens.

The houses notwithstanding, the layout at Jones Creek is quite compelling and dramatic, particularly the outstanding back nine, which features big, downhill drives to tight landing areas bordered by trees and bunkers.

The best golf holes are the final three, all par fours: a 380-yarder that, after a downhill drive, requires a huge, uphill second shot; a very tough 460-yarder; then another downhill/uphill test.

Amen corner? Not exactly. But if you’re looking for a good place to play near one of golf’s shrines, you’ll be thankful for being at Jones Creek rather than one of the area’s scraggly munis.
